The "Marie Antoinette" 2006 movie retells the story of the Queen of France from a different perspective.She is seen as a teenager with no connections to reality who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.It won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, with Milena Canonero in charge of the wardrobe.

The crew recieved special permission to film in the palace of Versailles from the French government.Sofia Coppola was even allowed to film a ball scene for the wedding of Marie Antoinette with Louis XVI in the Hall of Mirrors, eventhough it was in restoration until 2007.

A part of the wardrobe worn by Hilary Swank in "The Affair of the Necklace" 2001 movie was also used in "Marie Antoinette".The affair of the diamon necklace was a big scandal in those times involving Queen Marie Antoinette herself.The original script of the movie briefly mentioned it, but it ended up never being used.
The red satin bejeweled gauntlets wore worn both by Kirsten and Hilary.
The red gown with three jeweled buttons seen on Asia Argento as countess of Du Barry, was also previously worn by Hilary Swank.

This piece of jewelry was supposed to be a gift for madame du Barry from Louis XV who asked Parisian jewelers Boehmer and Bassenge to create a diamond necklace that would surpass all others in grandeur.Its cost was estimated at 2,000,000 livres and was made of large diamonds and elaborate designs of festoons,pendants and tassels.It was later broken up and the large diamonds were sold separately.

In 2007, John Galliano decorated the bodice of one of the gowns with a replica of this necklace for the Fall Haute Couture collection of Christian Dior.
